Changing careers can be one of those opportunities where you could do something completely different and it could be the change you need in your life to really transform it. However, not everyone has the nerve to do it, many often simply dream about changing careers. However, if you’ve been thinking about doing it for a while, then here are some things to think about when changing careers.
Is it the right time?
The first thing to consider when changing a career is whether it’s the right time to do it or not. For example, there might be a pandemic on at the moment and so many people might not be looking to switch up their careers. However, there may still be companies and individuals hiring the role or in the industry that you’re after. It’s all about timing and taking the opportunity to do it at the right time.
What are your other talents and skills?
For creative artists like Nancy Etz, and entrepreneurs like me, I’m constantly looking at how far my skills and talents will expand to. When I started blogging, I didn’t think I had the potential to expand my writing beyond my blog but I did and now it’s the main reason why I’ve managed to go blogging full-time. You should always consider what talents or skills that exists both in your current job but also the industry you’re wanting to go into. You’ll likely surprise yourself by what skills can be adaptable to another career path.
Trust the process
The process – trust it. You’re on a path that’s made for you and you’re responsible for what happens. However, you cannot control everything and sometimes you just have to rely on things to turn out the way you hope they will be. The more you fuss over things, the more likely you’re going to self-sabotage. When it comes to stepping into a new career path, trust the process and don’t get yourself too worked up. Things will happen if they’re meant to. Don’t force it!
I know now that if things were to go drastically wrong tomorrow and I lost my income, I would bounce back after a few days of wallowing in self-pity. Why? Because I trust that it will lead me to better things and that I trust myself to make the right choices when it comes to my career. Whether it’s the right move or not, I’m trusting in the process and myself.
Always believe in yourself
The biggest thing I’ve learned through the last couple of years is that I have to believe in myself. If you don’t believe in yourself, then no one else will do it for you. When you want to start a business or do something completely out of what others would consider their comfort zone, their initial reaction will be ‘you won’t do it‘ or ‘it’s not achievable‘. Believing in yourself is important and when you’re doing something big like changing a career, you need to have faith in yourself that you are doing the right thing.
