Pests are nasty little bugs and wildlife that can infiltrate your home if given the opportunity. While one or two pests might be manageable, an infestation is something to avoid at all costs. Not only does an infestation cause a lot of stress and anxiety, but it can also ruin a lot of the home with the rubbish that pests leave behind in the process.
With that being said, it’s important to know what to do in the scenario where pests have come into your home and you need to get rid of them quickly. The faster you act, the lower the risk of it spreading and becoming a serious infestation. Here are five effective ways of getting rid of pests in your home.

Fix any cracks
First and foremost, if there are any areas in which the pests are getting in, it’s important to seal these up as best as possible. The last thing you want is to do everything possible to prevent pests except for sealing up any entry or exit points. These cracks or gaps will be small enough for most pests to fit through and that includes rats. Rats and mice have highly flexible bones, meaning they can squeeze their way into any tight hole to get into the property.
To further prevent rodent intrusions, consider using ultrasonic rodent repellents and rodent-proofing solutions to block access points and deter them from nesting in and around your home. These preventative measures can make a significant difference in keeping your property pest-free.
Try to locate all of the cracks in the home, especially when it comes to older properties that have become worn and tired over the years. Make sure you’re careful about what you’re using to fill up these gaps too as some materials will be more effective than others. It’s worth doing a bit of research to know what type of sealants and permanent fixes can be made depending on your budget available. The more impenetrable it is, the better as pests are highly effective in breaking through certain materials used to prevent entry.
Clear up any food and seal everything
To help ensure your home is less inviting for pests, try to clear up any food as soon as you can. Avoid leaving any food out overnight, especially if it’s not sealed up properly. Talking of sealing, all food should be sealed up and kept ideally in cupboards. Even rats have been known to eat through plastic so Tupperware may not even be safe to use.
Clear up food on a daily basis and seal everything in sight so that less food is being exposed and attracting pests of all shapes and sizes. Where possible, place food items in cupboards where they can’t get into them.
Keep the home inside and out clean
When it comes to keeping the home clean, it’s necessary to do it regularly in order to stay on top of the dirt and bacteria that can gather in the home. This sort of bacteria, grime and dirt can be a breeding ground for pests, which is why it’s important to try and keep it clean at all times.
This goes for both the inside and outside of the home. If these areas are being cleaned properly, chances are it’s going to cause a higher chance of pests both big and small, to try and enter the home. From the outside, any build-up of leaves and debris become a nest for these pests, so it’s useful to clear it as often as you possibly can.
Set traps
Where possible, set traps in the home to evade the pests from getting any further into the home or causing an infestation. There are a variety of humane and non-humane traps available to purchase on the internet and it can be a good way of tackling the problem yourself before it gets out of hand.
Not everyone enjoys setting traps so you may want to consult services outside of the home to help with this. However, your local DIY and home stores will likely have trap options available.
Bring in the professionals
For those that find themselves in the position of an infestation or simply don’t want to do the work themselves to get rid of a pest, professionals can be useful. If pest infestation isn’t a problem then it might be worth just getting pest proofing solutions to help put preventative measures in place. It’s better to avoid pests before they get into the home, rather than having to deal with them once they’ve already entered the property.
All these tips should hopefully help rid your home of pests before they become too much of a problem and should an infestation occur, call in the experts immediately.
