So, what might first-time visitors to the city expect from it? To begin with, you might be struck by the size and sound of it. This is a vibrant, noisy habitat for busy human beings, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by it – until you gather your bearings.
On the other hand, it’s fair to say that there’s a great deal of variety throughout the city – the relentless pace of Manhattan isn’t to be found in Queens or Brooklyn (at least, not quite to the same extent).
Getting around without stress
Among the best things about New York is the transit system, which makes it easy for newcomers to easily get around. If you’re familiar with subway systems in other parts of the world, then the one in New York might be easy to get to grips with. You can also cover many of the interesting areas on foot. The grid-based arrangement of avenues and streets makes it easy to get around, too.
If you’re planning a trip, then you’ll want to ensure that you see the city in chunks. Visit a single part of it at once, and you’ll avoid wasting time going back and forth from one area to the next.
What to expect from the classic sights
Of course, there are certain places that qualify as must-visit. In Central Park, you’ll be able to sit down and gather your thoughts, while watching New Yorkers go by. Then there’s the elevated walkway that is the High Line, and the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. You’ll want to spend at least a little bit of time in Times Square, too.
Many of the more popular sites are actually spread out, which means that you’ll need to plan appropriately if you want to see all of them. The journey out to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, for example, will tend to take a considerable chunk of your day.
Money, timing and recent UK context
It’s fair to say that New York isn’t the most affordable holiday destination for UK travellers, especially given the recent downturn in the value of the pound against the dollar. Despite this, it remains an enduringly popular choice. If you’re concerned about affordability, then you might keep your trip flexible, so that you can spend a little extra if you discover that you can afford to do so.
