What to Know Before Heading Off to Your Next Blood Test

Let’s be honest, having a blood test probably isn’t at the top of anyone’s list of fun things to do. It’s usually over pretty quickly, though, and a little preparation beforehand? Well, that makes the whole thing feel much easier.

You don’t normally need to do anything complicated. In fact, there are just a few basic things worth checking before you head off to your appointment. Keep reading on to learn more.

What Tests Are You Getting?

First things first, do you know what you’re actually being tested for?

There are lots of different blood tests. They all have their own jobs. Some are part of a routine check-up. Others are ordered because your doctor wants to take a closer look at something specific.

You might be having your cholesterol, blood sugar, hormones, or vitamin levels checked. Or perhaps you’ve been asked to have a particular test that you’ve never heard of before. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what is an ApoB test, for example, you’re definitely not alone.

Don’t worry about memorizing a list of medical terms before you arrive. Knowing roughly what your blood is best tested for, though, would be useful – particularly when your results come back.

And if you’re not sure what a particular test is for, then ask. There’s no silly question when it comes to your health.

Do You Need to Fast Beforehand?

This is one thing you’ll definitely want to check before your appointment.

Some blood tests require you to fast. Others don’t. If you do need to fast, you should be given instructions when booking the appointment. These instructions will tell you how long you need to go without food and what you’re allowed to drink.

If nobody has mentioned fasting – but you’re still unsure – give the clinic a quick call. This is better than just assuming. And it’s much easier to check beforehand than turn up and discover you need to reschedule.

Follow the instructions you’ve been given if you do need to fast.

What Documents Do You Need to Bring?

Before you walk out the door, have a quick check that you’ve got anything you’ve been asked to bring.

That might be an appointment confirmation, referral form, or paperwork from your doctor. If you’ve been given something specifically for the blood test, pop it somewhere safe. This’ll stop you from hunting around for it at the last minute.

It is also handy to know which medications or supplements you take. You may not need to provide this information, but it’s useful to have it to hand if the healthcare professional asks.

To conclude, there isn’t really much to worry about here. At most, you need three simple steps: check what tests you’re having, find out if you need to fast, and make sure you’ve got the necessary paperwork. It’s that easy.

But if you are unsure about anything before your appointment, then just ask. A quick question beforehand could save you a lot of stress later on.
