Why I’m Really Not A Morning Person

Honest to god, people who get up at 4am to do yoga or just generally start their day voluntarily at that hour – I freaking salute you. BUT I CANNOT DO THAT. Ever since I was a teen, I have the inability to get up at a reasonable time unless I have to go to work. I find my body is now naturally waking up at 8/9am every day but still I easily manage to force my body back to sleep. I am not a morning person and have never been one.

Morning Person

And there are reasons why I’m not a morning person. I think we all have different points of the day in which we’re most productive and I think that changes over our lifetime when priorities change.

I’m A Night Owl. Period.

There are two types of people. The early risers and the night owls and I am most definitely a night owl. I’ve always been one and there’s no denying that. I don’t know who I get it from specifically but I’m going to say the person I relate to the most with it is my auntie. She’s a late riser too and I love staying up late. My average bedtime is usually between 11.30pm-1am. I do struggle on less than six hours sleep but I can function properly on six-seven hours. That’s usually what I get each night and then I make up for it on the weekends. But I do find that I am more productive in the evening than in the morning.

When I go freelance, I’m excited but nervous to be responsible for my own working hours. I think I’ll definitely find it difficult, to begin with. Not in terms of actually getting any work done but finding what balance works best. For example, I may get up at a later point in the day if I find that working until 2am is better. It’s all going to be a learning curve for me but I’m excited about it nonetheless.

I Don’t Envy Early Risers

I’m just going to put it out there. I love that I’ve fallen in love with someone who loves to lie in. I have friends who get up very early in the morning and can’t fathom why we’d want to get up at 11am every morning. Apparently we miss out on half of the day but actually, I’m doing the same amount of work in that day, regardless. I still get my shit done but I get a few extra hours of sleep in. PLUS, you have to make the most of the sleep you’re getting while you still can. Everyone knows that once you have a baby, you never experience the wonderful thing that is sleep again so why would you want to deny yourself of that?!

I Love My Sleep Too Much

And I mean, who doesn’t like sleeping? It’s the only peaceful part of my life (that and the monthly back massage I get). I also believe it’s why my skin is so good and how I can work the way I do. Being a workaholic means that I need to get plenty of sleep and if I didn’t get the amount I indulge in now, I’d be a walking zombie who would snap at anyone and everything, regardless of how much coffee I drank.

Are you a morning person or are you like me? Let me know in the comments below.
