A lot of people like to indulge in their passions when they travel. When they are on holiday they have the time to do some of the things they can’t normally do at home. That includes attending live events like concerts, plays, exhibitions and operas. With this in mind, I thought I would share with you some of the best places to enjoy, as opera lovers, while staying in Italy. As you can see from this website there is quite a bit of choice available. So, I have had to narrow things down a bit and just share some of the best options with you.

La Scala, Milan
No list of Italian opera venues would be complete without including La Scala in Milan. This is perhaps the most famous opera house in the world. Since 1778, audiences have been enjoying performances here.
The opera season at La Scala traditionally starts on the 7th of December. You do not have to dress formally when attending most performances here. Although you should always check what the dress code is before booking. But, it would be a shame not to dress up and enjoy the full experience when attending a performance at La Scala.
La Fenice, Venice
The Phoenix opera house in Venice is another venue that has been welcoming the crowds since the late 1700s. Unfortunately, this opera house has quite literally been the phoenix that rises from the ashes. It has burnt down several times, the last time in 1996. A sad event, but, one that means that this opera house is now fitted with a state of the art audio system, which means great acoustics.
Outdoor Opera At The Arena Di Verona
Outdoor opera performances are growing in popularity, across the world, including in Italy. It is now possible to see outside performances in several places. Understandably, most of these take place during the summer months.
The Arena di Verona is just one example. The Roman amphitheatre that was built in 1AD is well preserved. So, it provides a spectacular backdrop for the opera performances that take place there during the summer months. Interestingly, it is the audience that provides the lighting for this venue. Each of the 15,000 attendees is encouraged to bring and light a candle. It is a lovely tradition that results in the creation of a wonderful ambience.
Attend The Puccini Festival In Tuscany
Tuscany is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year. But, if you are an opera fan try to time your visit to coincide with the Puccini Festival. It is held mainly alongside the lake near Torre del Lago between July and August. You are sure to really enjoy the outdoor performances that are held at the Teatro dei Quattromila. It is a truly spectacular venue. But, you will need to be a fan of Puccini’s work. He was born nearby, so understandably, virtually every performance features his music.
The above is just a taste of what Italy has to offer for opera lovers. If you would like more options, just click here.
