Your living room is one of the spaces where you spend the most time in your home. It’s a place to relax, watch TV, talk to your family or just be together at the end of the day. Because it’s a room used for relaxation, you want it to be comfortable. You should be able to sink into a comfy sofa or chair and unwind whenever you want to. There also needs to be enough space for the whole family to do the same. If you’re thinking of redecorating your living room or you’ve just moved into a new home, you can take the opportunity to make it as comfortable as possible. Here are some of the things that you can do.

Start with Comfortable Seating
Of course, if you want a comfortable living room, you need to have comfortable seating. Firstly, think about how much space you have and how many people you typically need to seat in your living room. You might also give some thought to how to fit extra people in if you ever have guests. It’s a good idea to combine different types of seating, especially for families. Start with some leather sofas and armchairs or recliners to provide both individual seats and places to snuggle up together too. For children, you might also add some smaller seats or even beanbags, which can be particularly handy if you have guests and you might want to put the kids on the smaller chairs.
Add Some Cushions and Throws
Once you have chosen your comfortable seating, you can make it even more comfortable. Throw pillows and blankets or throws are excellent additions to your living room. They provide extra comfort, especially during the winter when you might want something to help you stay warm. Choose accessories that complement your seating but don’t necessarily match them completely. If you want to remove these items when it’s warmer or you don’t need them, it’s a good idea to have a chest or storage in your coffee table where you can put them.
Get a Soft Rug
What’s under your feet makes a difference to the comfort of your living room too. Putting down a nice rug or two can make a big difference to how comfortable your living room looks and feels. It can also help to make your living room warmer and it might help to reduce noise too. A rug might look good underneath your coffee table or in front of your sofa. They come in all sizes, so it could be a large rug that takes up a good portion of the room. You can even layer rugs if you want to play with different patterns and textures.
Install Adjustable Lighting
The lighting in your living room is also a factor to take into account if you want it to be comfortable. Too much light and it could be painfully bright but too little light could leave everyone squinting to try and see. If you have adjustable levels of lighting, you can change how much light there is to match the conditions and the mood. This might mean installing dimmable lights, so you can turn them down to a level that you like. Or you could have different types of lighting, from ceiling lights to lamps.
Create Layers and Texture
Adding layers and different textures to your living room is another great way to add more comfort. When you’ve sorted your seating and accessories and maybe put some rugs down, think about what else to add to your living room to fill the space. If there’s too much empty space, it could make the room seem colder than you want it to be. Add some other furniture, whether it’s a coffee table, TV or media unit, bookshelves, or something else, as well as some accessories and art.
Make Cleaning Easier With The Right Flooring
While carpet is helpful for adding warmth, it’s worth looking at wood flooring to help minimise the cleaning that’s needed within the space. Wood flooring is easier to maintain and will also last longer when it comes to stains and natural wear and tear.
Keep Some Breathing Room
When you’re decorating your living room to make it warmer, try not to go too overboard. It’s good to add warmth and comfort, but if you put too much in there, you could make it uncomfortable. When there’s less space to move, it might end up feeling claustrophobic. Although it’s good to make sure your living room doesn’t look too boring or empty, keep a good balance so that there’s still room to breathe. A little bit of empty space is more comfortable than a packed room.
Make your living room more comfortable with these tips and you’ll love relaxing in there at the end of a long day or whenever you have free time.
