Five Things To Remember When Moving House

I’ve moved out of rented accommodation numerous times in London and once into our first ever home. We’ve got our property on the market now – life update – which is very exciting but that also means the somewhat dreaded project of moving everything from one place to another. A few changes have happened since we moved in over three years ago now. We’ve been through a pandemic, got a puppy, moved our wedding and recently got our first car together.  We’ve also accumulated A LOT more furniture since our renting days. So what five things would I suggest to remember when moving house?

Trust me, this is as much for me as it is for you.

Book the removal service early on

One of the things that I will definitely take more time in doing this time around is the removal service part of the move. You want someone who is going to take absolute care in moving your belongings from one place to another. It’s therefore important to think about what type of services you need and the reputation of the company itself. I’m certainly going to spend a bit more in order to get a removal service that comes in and takes care of everything bulky like our bed, the sofa, dining table, etc.

There might be a scenario where we need to think about storage at some point and so something like the Now Storage self storage in Reading is a useful example of a place to store any furniture we might need to if we found ourselves needing temporary storage.

Make an essentials box or two

One of the things that I found really beneficial when moving is having an essentials box. An essentials box is something you’ll use for the first twenty-four hours of being in your new property. It’s a box of stuff you need like hygiene products, the basic kitchenware, etc. It’s going to make it helpful in scenarios where you might not be able to unpack everything straight away or where you might have delays in the removal services.

Keep your essentials box on you if you can, rather than putting it on the removals van.

Spend extra for packaging and moving valuables

As I mentioned when it comes to removals, it’s worth spending the extra to take care of your valuables. I know that there are certain things in the home that will need some extra packaging. It’s important to avoid any breakages and damage, especially when they’re valuable or priceless items.

Even though it might already be an expensive process to move, it’s still a good investment to spend more to protect your belongings when moving house.

Re-direct your post

Re-directing your post is essential and I’m certainly going to do this when we move. You will do everything you can to re-direct post that you regularly get through your post box. Even though most of us are likely paperless with most things, there are still important documents that you may get and that you don’t want to miss!

The process can be fun – enjoy it!

Even though the thought of moving all our stuff is terrifying right now, I’m also looking forward to being able to pack up all our stuff and move. It’s a great process and one that can be enjoyable. Try to find those moments of enjoyment in the process, regardless of how stressful it might get.
