It’s Waaaaay More Eco-friendly
Organic cotton is grown using completely natural methods, which means zero chemicals or pesticides go into the process. This is far kinder to the environment when compared to mass-made regular cotton — the non-organic cotton industry is known as the “dirtiest crop” in farming circles due to the levels of chemicals and pollutants used. These chemicals affect the planet and significantly impact the habitat of wildlife, as well as polluting water sources for local communities, which in poorer countries can be enormously dangerous.
And Community Friendly, Too
As well as keeping chemicals out of the land and water, growing organic cotton can also be kinder to those who grow and harvest the cotton. GOTS-certified textiles guarantee that this cotton was grown using natural means. It also promises that the people who have grown and produced it receive a living wage, helping communities to grow naturally.
Kinder on Skin
These chemicals and pesticides are used more than you think in ordinary cotton. The National Wildlife Federation has calculated that just one cotton t-shirt will use an average of 17 teaspoons of chemical fertilisers and nearly a teaspoon of active harsh chemicals, such as pesticides and insecticides. This can cause reactions to those with sensitive skin, as these are still traceable and transferable from the fabric.
Parents especially will know how sensitive a baby’s skin can be, which makes chemical-free organic cotton baby clothes a great option. This will dramatically reduce the chances of sensitive skin having a reaction, which can cause your little one a lot of irritation.
It Lets You Breathe
As well as being grown in a completely natural way, organic cotton is also hand-picked. This means that cotton fibres are longer and less damaged than their machine-harvested equivalent. These longer fibres allow for more airflow, which gives organic cotton its excellent breathable quality.
This is another benefit that will appeal to parents, as babies cannot control their body temperature, meaning that breathable fabric is essential to stop overheating — this is why organic cotton sleep suits and bodysuits are popular.
It Lasts a Lot Longer
These more robust and longer fibres also make it a far more durable option when compared to non-organic cotton. This is another reason organic cotton is a more sustainable alternative — you won’t have to buy as many as they will stay pristine for a long time, which is another excellent reason to invest in organic cotton.
