They say that travelling in all forms is fun, and there’s a degree of truth in that. However, it’s also true that some adventures are better than others, right? There are a few common threads that connect those overseas trips that stand out in the memory, and also the ones that weren’t quite as enjoyable as we imagined when we booked them. So let’s make sure that the good trips outweigh the forgettable trips in the future. Below, we look at four ways to get the most out of your next overseas adventure.

Give Yourself Enough Time
We all want to travel as much as we can, and visit as many different spots as possible. Sometimes, though, we have to admit that it’s just not possible. If we’re forever running from one attraction to the next, and otherwise trying to cram too much into our journey, then we won’t be able to “stop and smell the roses.” We’ll be too busy moving from one thing to the next! If you want to see everything, give yourself enough time. If you don’t have enough time, then be more selective. It’s much better to see three attractions in detail rather than rush your way through ten.
Learn a Few Words
You’re not expected to learn a whole different language just because you want to take a short trip to another country. But that doesn’t mean that you should expect just to get by with English. This isn’t really about what’s practical — it’s about what’s respectful. You’ll find that you’re treated that little bit nicer if you know how to save the basics in the language. Even knowing how to say hello, please, thank you, and goodbye will be a start. You’re in their home, not the other way round — the onus is on you to speak their language.
Understand the Culture
Speaking a few words to the locals in their language is a positive thing to do. But you’ll also want to take steps to ensure that you don’t inadvertently insult them, too. The world is large, diverse, and complex, and for that reason, there’s no reason to assume that people from other countries are going to act or have the same values as you do. Before setting off to another country, take a read of the global etiquette guide at Travelbag.co.uk. It might just prevent you from committing a social faux pas that could undermine your trip.
Dash Your Expectations
Have you ever heard of ‘Paris Syndrome’? It’s a condition that occurs when people from other cultures – especially Asia – visit the French capital and are thoroughly underwhelmed by what they see. But hey, it’s not the fault of the city if people from other countries build it up so much in their head. So when you visit a new land, do so with an open mind, and limited expectations. It’s always better to see things as they are, rather than through the lens of what you thought they’d be.
