My London Marathon Journey | Week 7 | Hannah McCarthy

– GUEST CONTENT –

This week was a recovery week for my training in the London Marathon. It definitely came at the right time because I was struck with the worst cold. It was almost as though my body had taken the opportunity to get sick before I got into much longer runs – in a way I was grateful.

Running Memories

But this week represented something very important to me. The 14th February 2019 marked a year since I had started running & it felt like such an achievement. When I think back to a year ago, I was the heaviest I had ever been, lacking in energy & decided I wanted to take on a challenge. For Lent, I decided to pick something up & someone had recommended the Couch to 5k. It’s a 9-week running app that consists of 3 runs a week & by the end of it, you will be able to run for 30 minutes straight. I wasn’t perfect or fast but I kept at it & 9 weeks later on 22nd April 2018 (London Marathon Day) I completed it! I was on such a high I took completing it on the Marathon day as a sign & took the leap & applied for the 2019 Marathon.

One year on & here we are, training away & feeling fitter than I have felt in a long time. Running has changed me in so many ways for the better. Yes, I have physical goals that I am working towards but what I wasn’t expecting was how much it mentally changed me. Now when I look in the mirror I feel happy & confident in myself. I am in control of my body more than anything whilst before it controlled me.

I cannot wait to see what the next year brings for my running journey & hope that when I reflect back in a years time I can be just as proud as I have been in myself for the past year.

Week 7 Run 1 – 14/02/2019

1 year of running today. I don’t even care that I’m ill because I am on such a high. A nice easy 20-minute jog reflecting on what a year it has been.

Week 7 Run 2  – 15/02/2019

A 30-minute foggy morning run. Still feeling unwell but I keep plodding on.

Week 7 Run 3 – 17/02/2019

A 50 minute morning countryside run. Staying at Elliott’s parents today so was very lucky to be able to get out onto the long country roads & take a nice sunny leisurely run.
