There was a time where I didn’t use to wear primers. And to think that was a thing for me is mind-boggling now that I know how influential primers can be for your makeup and for the look of your skin in general. I often just go for primers when I’m having a relaxed makeup look or if I need something to perk up my skin ready for a gym session. I now own quite a few primers, so I thought I’d show you three of my favourites and why they are so good for my skin and makeup routine.
Topshop Longwear Illuminating Primer
I’m all about the low budget options because I find that most low-budget makeup can actually be really good and just as good as the products that are triple the price. I worked with Very & Topshop over the summer of last year for their launch on the website of their makeup range. I’ve always wanted to try their makeup but have never gotten around to trying it out. The Longwear Illuminating Primer has to be one of my favourite budget primers because it has a pearl undertone that is gorgeous and shows off under the skin. I also tend to use it as a highlighter sometimes on the cheekbones. As it’s longwear, it’s a suitable addition to the rest of your makeup picks to help provide that glowy skin, even after the foundation has faded.
I also used it when I was in Egypt late last year and it just gave me a gorgeous glow with my tan. I find this works on both my tanned skin but also my pale-ass skin too. Priced at £14 this is on the higher end of low budget but it’s worth it for just how pretty that pearl effect is on the skin.
I think if you’re looking for something to start off in your primer collection, then this is definitely one that’s a little bit different to the usual primers that are usually un-tinted and tend to just mattify the skin.
ThisWorks In Transit Camera Close-Up
When it comes to trying different products, I’m signed up to two beauty subscription boxes that provide me with plenty of products to try out and test for my skin, whether that’s skincare or makeup. ThisWorks In Transit Camera Close-Up is one that my friend was raving about and the reason I ended up subscribing to the first of my beauty boxes, Birchbox. This was only a sample size but I’m certainly going to purchase the full-size version when I run out.
It’s not just a primer but a mask and moisturiser too. It’s a good alternative to wearing makeup if you want to go bare, particularly over the summer which I’m likely to do when I start fake tanning in the spring/summer. For the full-sized version you’d be paying £32.00 and that’s pricey for a primer but I definitely think it’s one of those that would be a foundation, primer and moisturiser in one. If you were to pay for those three seperately, you’d probably spend a bit more than £32.00 anyway.
It’s quite light-weight and mattifies the skin very slightly. It’s a good all-round product and as this was my first experience of ThisWorks, I was impressed.
YSL All Hours Primer
And finally, this is one of the first primers I got, having won it as part of a prize a while back. It’s a runny primer so it’s worth being cautious when you use it for the first time. It’s a very light liquid and it has a slight pearl sheen to the liquid itself but doesn’t dry down the same way that the Topshop one does.
The YSL All Hours Primer costs £30.00 and again, it’s up there with the price of the ThisWorks one. It provides my skin with a more mattifying look and it’s been developed to help hold the foundation and reduce the appearance of pores. It’s a very pretty primer and I find it helps to achieve a natural glow that’s different to the Topshop one in that it isn’t irredescent, it just makes the skin look healthier.
And that’s my three favourite primers! Let me know your favourite primers in the comments below.
