Moving from our rented place to our first home was an experience that we’d done somewhat multiple times before. We moved down to London back in 2014 and lived in three different rental properties during that time. With that being said, we had the experience of moving four times so far during our time in London. It’s important that you’re prepared for your moving day. There are definitely some useful tips worth knowing so that you can make that move as seamless as possible. Here are five tips for moving house.

Plan In Advance
It’s very important that when it comes to moving house, you’re planning it all in advance. As you tend to acquire more furniture, belongings, and household members, the move itself is likely to become more challenging. By planning everything ahead, you can try to minimise the number of things that could go wrong during the move itself. A timeline is a great way of taking control of the situation and it’s certainly worth getting yourself a to-do list set up so that you can cross off everything. Knowing you have it all written down means you won’t be spending too many sleepless nights, feeling like you’ve forgotten something important to do with the move itself.
Planning is always going to be critical with a house move and even though mistakes or issues can occur, the chances of it happening are certainly going to be minimal. If you’re not someone who is highly organised, now is the time to do so.
Pick A Reputable Mover
One of the things that I’ll definitely want to do properly next time around is to pick a reputable mover. We chose one that I thought would be appropriate and at the time, seeing as we didn’t have much furniture at all, it was good enough for the price. However, when we move this time around, we have a lot of fragile and valuable furniture that I want to have dealt with properly. That’s why I’m certainly thinking of using The Man Van due to their location being in London but also that they seem to have a more tailored service than the one I used before.Â
We’ve currently got our property on the market and at the moment we’ve been collecting the odd box and we’ve got a roll of bubble wrap but for the most part, we’re going to need a lot more help when it comes to the move and having a man with a van service, is certainly going to be useful.
Reputable movers are a great way to give yourself the peace of mind you need when moving. It’s helpful to use the best in the business and to not scrimp on quality. After all, you want only the best handling your property, not matter how valuable or not some items might be. The Man Van is a great one to go with.
Declutter Your Home
I highly recommend you declutter your home before moving. I did this before we moved into our first home and I guarantee it’s the best thing you’ll ever do. You end up moving with a lot less clutter and it means your new home is going to be brand-spanking new with what you need only. If you’ve left cupboards and wardrobes to fill up with unnecessary rubbish, then why would you want to take it with you?
Make sure you declutter your home with anyone you live with (who is physically able to help) because there’s nothing worse than tackling it on your own. Set aside some time where you can spend the right amount of time decluttering the space. Life can get in the way sometimes and disrupt those plans but doing it all in one go is a lot easier than doing it bit by bit. It can be hard to find that motivation each time.
Don’t Leave The Packing Until The Night Before
As much as it may seem like a fun idea, packing the night before is never a good idea. For me, I like to start packing as soon as we have a date in sight. In reality, you don’t need to use everything in your home every day and so it’s worth packing up stuff that you know you’re not going to need until you move into your new place. It’s also good to have a box or two, that can be what you live out of for the 24 hours before and after the move. It’s useful to try and get everything done before the night before the move because this can be a time where you can relax and go bed early ready for the big day ahead.
Packing in advance is something your future self is going to thank you for. So if possible, try to do all the packing as soon as you have the green light on your move.
Get In Help From Family & Friends
Finally, it’s a good idea to get lots of help from family and friends. If they live locally to you or are able to come over and help, then the more hands you have, the quicker everything will get loaded and unloaded from your current property to the next one. Any removal service will also appreciate the extra helpers you have available to use. There’s going to be plenty of family and friends who are willing to help you and your household to move. It also makes for a lovely memory with you and your family/friends.
It’s bound to be something you pay back eventually when your friends or family move. It’s nice to also have people you recognise, helping you move your belongings, rather than just strangers. You’ve also got more eyes on the removal process. This ensures that everything is being packaged and packed on properly and unloaded in a safe manner.
