Keeping Stress At Bay When Moving House

When it comes to moving house, it’s one that’s widely regarded as one of the most stressful life events. While it may not be possible to wave a magic wand and transport your stuff from A to B in an instant, there are ways to keep stress at bay. Here are some tips to keep stress at bay when moving house.

Give yourself as much time as possible

Unless you find yourself in a situation where you’re moving suddenly and unexpectedly, it’s a good idea to try and give yourself as much time as possible to prepare for your move. Once you have a date in mind, start preparing your house or apartment. Declutter and have a clear-out before you start packing. Go through each room, creating separate piles of items you want to keep and take with you, those you want to donate or sell, and stuff that can go to the tip. Once you’ve eliminated clutter, it should be much easier to pack up your possessions. Start packing anything you won’t need before your relocation date. If you’re moving in the summer, for example, you can put winter clothes and shoes in boxes ready to go. Pack up spare rooms and tackle attics and garages.

Book a removals firm

If you’re thinking about hiring a removalist, it’s beneficial to do some research and ask for recommendations before you book. Read reviews and check ratings and ask colleagues, neighbours, and friends for advice. Contact reputable firms, get some quotes, and check availability. If you have special requests or you’re looking for additional services, such as unpacking, or moving expensive or large items, always check prices in advance and ask for a full, written quote when moving house.

Write a list of jobs

Often, when you move house, you feel like you’ve got hundreds of different jobs to do and things keep popping into your mind. Write a list of things to do as soon as you confirm a moving date. This should cover everything from packing and wrapping fragile items to contacting utility providers, changing your address, and booking a cleaning firm if you need or want to have the property professionally cleaned when you leave. If you’ve got a list in front of you, you can work through it methodically and add to it if anything else crops up.

Mark boxes and keep essentials out

Packing and unpacking can be time-consuming. To make the task simpler, always mark your boxes with the intended location in your new home and write what is inside the box. If you can take pots and pans directly to the kitchen and towels and toiletries to the bathroom, for example, this will save a huge amount of time. It’s also a great idea to pack an overnight bag with essentials you’ll need for the first night. This will enable you to relax and save you scouring boxes to find pyjamas, mugs, and towels.

Moving can be stressful but there are ways of simplifying the process and making life easier. Try to prepare in advance, book a reputable, reliable removalist, write down a list of jobs to complete, and label every box to make unpacking quick and hassle-free.
