What Did Your Mum Teach You Growing Up? | Heathcote & Ivory

I recently collaborated with Heathcote & Ivory on their Mother’s Way campaign. It’s celebrating mothers everywhere and what lessons they taught us kids growing up. I contributed to the article that you can find here but it got me thinking, what did your mum teach you growing up?

I know that not everyone is fortunate to have their mums in their life anymore, whether that be them passing or just not being in the picture. However, regardless of how long they were there or perhaps who stepped in as that maternal figure, what did they teach you about life?

My mum taught me a few things growing up that I feel I’ve taken along with me through my adulthood so far. The major one is that I should never spend beyond my means and that having savings is a great thing. It’s played such an influential part on my life that I’m going to pass the same advice down to my children when I have them.

This life lesson has helped me stay out of debt for the most part and to have a healthy relationship with credit cards. Although I have my student debt, the only other debt I have is the one credit card, which I tend to pay back fairly quickly. I’ve never needed to take out any other form of loan and I’ve got savings too, so I’m definitely in a good financial position.

The other thing that both my parents taught me in life is to go for my dreams, whatever they might be. My mum is an optimist and I would say my dad is a realist, so the combination of the two is what I am when it comes to goals and particularly, my career. As a result, I tried out acting for a few years and it gave me the inner drive to strive for my dream of being my own boss, which I know am.

I honestly have a lot to thank my mum for and so I want to say a big thanks to my mum on Mother’s Day. What did your mum teach you and that you’ve carried on into your adulthood?
