Mistakes On Driving Tests & How To Avoid Them

This is a collaboration that seems so well-timed because I myself am learning to drive and hopefully over the next few months, I’ll be taking my driving test. I’ve still got some way to go though before I feel confident on the road and have all the various skills and knowledge to drive safely. If you’re someone who is still learning then LeaseCar UK is helping learn drivers ensure that they make minimal mistakes when it comes to driving tests, which you can find here. So with all this being said, let’s dive into mistakes that are made commonly on driving tests and how to avoid them.

Feeling too anxious or nervous

It’s very common for nerves and anxiety to get the best of us in all aspects of life. Whether you’re taking a driving test or you’re starting a new job, there’s a lot of nerves that many of us can feel and it’s often something that really influences your quality of driving. When you’re nervous or anxious, you’re likely on edge and perhaps don’t hear the driving instructor properly. It might also be that you make mistakes due to feeling nervous because often enough, common sense will go out the window, along with everything you’ve learned.

In order to get over this, it’s worth making sure your driving instructor is doing plenty of mock tests with you to get you into that mindset of what a test will feel like and the atmosphere of the test too. By having plenty of preparation, it’s going to help massively to calm your nerves.

Looking out for junctions

Junctions are a tricky one because there are lots of different ones that you’ll be challenged on. As LeaseCar UK’s campaign explains, a lot of learner drivers will fail at this point when it comes to spotting junctions and knowing what to do at the junction itself. It’s good to be attentive to all parts of the road when you’re driving, which includes making sure that you spot road signs for various junctions and be wary of others on the road with you.

Not checking your speed

Many drivers don’t realise just how fast they may be going when it comes to their speed and this is a problem because speed limits are put in place for a reason – to keep you and other drivers and pedestrians safe from harm. Keep an eye on your speed dial and if you find yourself going too fast, make sure you spend more time monitoring your speed in general when practicing.

LeaseCar UK’s #LearnerToDrive campaign is a reminder that drivers all start somewhere and just because you fail the test, doesn’t mean you’re not worthy of driving a car. Make sure you take these tips with you for next time and remember if you fail, it was meant to be and you’ll learn from the mistakes made.

Remember Mirror, Signal, Maneuver

One of the first terms you learn when learning to drive is the mirror, signal, maneuver combination. This is important because it’s at the core of your driving and something you’ll need to do every time you move over into a lane, pull out of a parking space, etc. Make sure that this is stuck in your head and you say it in your head or out loud if it helps!
