Be Mindful of Your Surroundings

As often happens, when you are in the middle of a move, you tend to focus on the end goal of unpacking and setting up your new household. It is an all-consuming task, especially if you do not like clutter or unfinished projects.

Unfortunately, throughout the stress of taking care of everything involved with a successful move, you might miss out on what is around you, such as understanding the local policies and behaviours, and learning how to be a good neighbour to those around you. Take a few moments to reflect on what you need to know about your new city to help set yourself up for success.

Act Like a Tourist

If you have not spent much time in your new city, you need to get out and explore a bit, just like a tourist would. Take advantage of invitations from new neighbours, co-workers, or classmates when they ask you to be social instead of staying home to unpack. As a newcomer, you have cache and a window of opportunity to get to know people and the surrounding area. Let the new people in your life play tour guide while you take on the role of tourist.

Check out the local tourism office and pick up a few flyers, maps, and a guidebook. Ask for recommendations for restaurants, activities, and a calendar of events. Getting to know your new hometown should be a fun experience and an essential part of every move.

Learn About Local Transportation Options

While you may have your own vehicle or live and work in a walkable area of the city, it is still a good idea to get to know the local transportation options that are available to you. This is important in case your vehicle breaks down and is in need of a repair, you want to have a safe night out on the town without the worry of driving yourself, or there is an emergency.

The tourist office or a quick query online will probably answer all of your questions about transportation options. Try taking a few rides to and from work on the local bus or hop on the tube to go shopping at a distant market on the weekend. This is another fun way to explore your new city and try out new things.
