The flights have been booked and I’m so excited to say that both myself and Sam will be heading to New York this October to see my best friend and bridesmaid to be, Charlie. We’ll also be taking advantage of the sights as I didn’t quite get to see everything on my last trip to the big apple with my mum. Holidays on a budget are something we all need at some point in our lives and Holiday Gems got in touch to ask me how I manage to do a break when money is tight.
Even though we’ve brought a place and we’re saving for a wedding (LOL), seeing the world shouldn’t be put on hold because there’s so much of it to see. I have a bucket list the size of my arm of destinations I’d like to visit before I’m 30 so I better get saving and using my own advice for the next few trips away. Holiday Gems low cost holidays are a great way of saving a few pounds so be sure to take a look at their offers online.
Try & Book Out Of The School Holidays
I know it’s hard if you have kids but we all know that hotels and flights bump up their prices when the kids are off school. If you are in the position to book out of term time, do it. We managed to get a steal of a flight to New York in October for just £287 with Virgin Atlantic. As we got it so cheap, we then added on the Economy Classic option, which includes our check in luggage, seat selection and in-flight entertainment, food and drink.
Set Up Google Alerts For Flights
This was very handy when I was looking for low-cost flights for New York. Google Alerts is a great way of tracking prices if you think that they could potentially reduce over time. You do tend to see the prices fluctuate throughout the week and you’ll receive an update every time the price changes. All you need is the ideal dates you’d like to travel and the airports you’d be flying to and from.
Use Airbnb For Cheap Accommodation
Airbnb has really rocked the hospitality industry because it now gives the average Joe the ability to put up their villa, apartment, B&B as an alternative option to staying in a hotel or hostel. The opportunities are endless and some people offer their entire home for you to use.
We used Airbnb for one of my best friend’s wedding and for three nights it cost £394 and that was split between 8 of us. That’s £49.25 each and just £16 per night per person. I mean, you’re never going to find somewhere as cheap right?
Look For Bus/Walking Tour Deals
If you are travelling to a big city, take advantage of bus and walking tours that will be on offer. You’ll probably have come across the sight-seeing bus tours around London when you’ve visited and they offer a great price for you to see many iconic spots without having to spend a fortune on the underground and taxis.
When we visited Rome, we took very little taxis and trains because we’d get off at one spot where there were lots of famous monuments around and we’d walk
Book In Advance
A lot of attractions/activities whilst you are on holiday are always best priced if you book in advance. Normally on the day bookings tend to be more expensive so if there’s the option to beat the queues and book before you fly, take full advantage of it.
