It’s weird to think that some places are considered lost and no longer exist when you look at the world map. It’s even weirder to think future generations won’t even realize what some places were before they were changed. As I yearn to travel more now than I did in my younger years, I thought I’d create a wishlist of countries I’d love to explore that now no longer exist…officially.
And if there’s something on this list that takes your fancy, you can book your next holiday with Azure, luxury holidays that have a selection of luxury destinations with bespoke packages and tours to make for a trip you’ll never forget.
Republic Of Venice
The Republic Of Venice was founded in 697 and it spanned modern-day northeast Italy, Croatia, Albania, and Greece. It was eventually overrun by the French and Austrian troops in 1797, who then proceeded to divide it up between the empires. Venice now as it’s known is a place I’ve always wanted to visit. It’s one of those places that looks as romantic as Paris. However, I’ve been told by a few people now that as the water level rise due to global warming, it’s already visibly threatening this ancient and historic place. So I need to act quickly and get this right at the top of my bucket list.
I want to ride on a gondola by someone in a striped black shirt and straw hat. There’s also a ton of historic monuments that I’d love to see.
Tibet
Interestingly, this is a place that existed until the 1950’s so it’s not just ancient history that gets rid of countries. Tibet was a region that achieved it’s own independence as of 1912. However, that independence didn’t last long when the Chinese Community Party defeated the Nationalist government in the Chinese Civil War. It was Bejing’s authority that was asserted and ended this independence in 1957. Tibet still exists but is no longer a country but a region in China. China is a place I would love to visit one day because I’ve always been fascinated by their culture and I love the look of the food over there.
When I end up visiting China, I would love to do the Great Wall, it’s one of those places that needs ticking off.
Newfoundland
This place recently popped up after seeing a production in the West End called ‘Come From Away‘. It’s a story about planes that were diverted during the 9/11 terror attacks to a small island called Newfoundland. Even though it’s part of Canada now, this place was self-governing from 1907 to 1949. I think the desire to visit now is to see the tiny place which trebled in population during 9/11. If you’ve no idea what I’m going on about, look it up because it’s one hell of a story.
Kingdom of Hawaii
Even though this is a typical place that everyone has on their travel bucket list, this place undeniably looks like paradise. Like literally if I could up and move my life and not have to work but just sit on a beach all day and read, Hawaii is probably where I’d be.
Hawaii is the type of place where I’d probably do very little exploring and will just spend my days sitting on the beach, soaking up the sun.
