We Brits love the summer – there’s no denying it! As soon as it hits 20 degrees, we’re all out in the garden like a flash of lightning. However, there are lots of different safety precautions outside that we don’t face indoors. The trick is to take all of the necessary precautions to ensure no one hurts themselves or causes damage to the property. So here’s how to stay safe in the garden during summer.
First thing’s first, if you’re going to be spending time outdoors, even after the sun goes down, and you require electricity to light and heat your patio, be sure to install the relevant outdoor power equipment. For example, you’ll need weatherproof lighting and sockets. After all, if you’re hosting BBQs, you’ll want to be able to see your guests, but you’ll also want to make sure that they are safe in your garden. If you’re fortunate enough to have decking installed in your garden, make sure you check it thoroughly after the wild winter weather, to make sure it hasn’t been damaged. Wear and tear can happen to even the best decking. Make sure there is no rotting and all screws are still in place.
You could give the railing a shake to ensure its firmly in place and prevent people from going flying if they lean on it. If you do need to do any repair work to your decking, be sure to wear appropriate safety equipment and don’t be afraid to ask help from a professional should you require it. You may also need to give it a once over with some decking oil to enhance the wood and prevent fading from UV rays.
Winter may have also caused damage to other areas of your garden. Harsh weather might have loosened some paving slabs, for example, which become a trip hazard. Hosepipes that are left unravelled are also likely to cause a fall, especially if you have young children, so it’s important to tidy away such garden equipment when it’s not in use.
