Has Social Media Caused A Rise In Plastic Surgery?

– SPONSORED CONTENT –

We cannot deny that social media is pretty much dominating most of our lives. We spend so much time tweeting or posting up pictures of our lives from our breakfast to our holiday snaps. But have we distorted reality so much that it’s making us critique our appearances and even consider plastic surgery? Being a millennial, I’ve grown up with technology and have seen how rapidly it’s changed in such a short space of time.Social Media I’ve read a lot of articles recently about how social media has increased the rate of plastic surgery. More people want Farrior Facial Plastic Surgery and other procedures in general, and I’m really not surprised. In fact, I can certainly see why because I’ve had moments where I’ve looked at myself in the mirror and thought about what I consider as my imperfections. My nose is a little too big or perhaps I wouldn’t say no to more chiseled cheekbones. But this has all derived from what I’ve seen on social media. You can’t help but compare yourself to others and I think we’re all guilty of doing it. I don’t think though that it’s just social media that’s contributed to us wanting to go under the knife of a plastic surgeon.

Reality TV Shows

There are so many more reality TV shows that exist now and they are EVERYWHERE. On Amazon Prime, Netflix, Now TV. It’s just endless and most of them showcase this life of (mostly) luxury where they’re beautifully presented from start to finish – even when they’re in bed, they’re in full glam. Not only that but the Kardashians as an example have heavily featured a lot of cosmetic procedures on screen and are also promoting products on social media that promise to achieve goals that aren’t really achievable. I think along with social media, reality tv shows have definitely contributed somewhat.

Love Island is the latest of reality tv shows to have a big impact on younger generations but instead of showing a variety of body shapes and sizes, they go ahead and pick the same model-like contestants.

Celebrity Lifestyles

Celebrities certainly have an influence over their fans and whether they intend to or not, a lot of us are pining after the lifestyle that they lead. However, for celebrities, they’re constantly in the public eye and having a bad hair day or a god forbid a spot rears its ugly head, they’re slated for it in the press. And that can be damaging for us who read these ‘news’ stories as it’s telling us that having faults is a bad thing and that we should fix it before we’re ridiculed.

Plastic surgery isn’t something that I’m against, I just think people are getting surgery for the wrong reasons. If there’s something that you want to change about your body that you believe will make you happier and more comfortable in your skin, then, by all means, do it. But don’t do it for anyone other than yourself. Social media isn’t going to disappear anytime soon and I think we could all probably do with being more honest with our lives online. We want to present the best version of ourselves but that’s not the only version, right?

When it comes to plastic surgery, what are your thoughts? Do you think social media has had an impact? Let me know in the comments below.
