Cosy and Contemporary: Decorating a Comfortable Modern Space

When it comes to our homes, we want it all; style, comfort, and rooms that are Instagram perfect. We want spaces that we can chill out in, but still look fabulous, surely that’s not too much to ask? Creating a home that combines modern interior design with all the cosiness and comfort of a traditionally styled home can feel like an impossible task. Completely restyling your home’s interior can feel daunting, especially if you are not sure how to achieve the look that you want. Thankfully there are ways to achieve a cool contemporary look without the need to compromise on either style or comfort. Here’s how to pull together your own cosy, yet modern space.

Feature Fire

There’s nothing like the cosy warmth and flickering flames of a fire to make you feel snuggly on a winter’s evening. An electric fireplace may not be a feature that you have considered adding to your contemporary interior design scheme, but it is something that you shouldn’t overlook. Electric fires have come a long way, and a stylish electrical fire can provide a statement focal point for your living space.

Lighting

Lighting is such an essential element of interior design and something that shouldn’t be overlooked when putting together your design plans. Rather than simply sticking with your ceiling light as the sole source of lighting for your room, add some extra options too.

Relying on a ceiling light for your room can feel a little harsh and doesn’t lend itself well to creating a cosy feel for your space. Lamps are a fantastic way of creating some atmospheric lighting in your room, providing a softer alternative to a ceiling light. Lamps offer a dual purpose; as well as giving subtle lighting, they also add a decorative touch to your room too.

Texture

When it comes to comfort, your choice of soft furnishings is crucial. Use your soft furnishings such as cushions and throws to introduce some texture into your design. Texture will add extra interest and depth to your room and helps to bring the overall look of your room together.

To make your space cosy, a gorgeous throw to snuggle up with on a cold winter’s night is essential. Choose a throw that will complement your colour scheme, and will look just as good layered on your sofa, as it feels to be wrapped up in.

Flooring

If your chosen flooring for your contemporary scheme is either floorboards or tiles, then the chances are that this won’t look or feel very warm and cosy. Introduce a rug to the mix for added texture and a lovely soft surface to walk on. There are some beautiful rugs out there, so you will easily be able to find one that matches both your look and your budget.

Including a rug will add a stylish dose of texture, and will enable you to have the best of both worlds; the contemporary feel of a hard floor, with the comfort of a rug underfoot.
