How I’m Coping With A Home Office

The challenges of working from home are still in the early days and I think I knew that this would happen eventually. I was so keen and worked really tirelessly for the first few months and now we’re into the new year, it’s a slow and painful start. There’s so much that I’d love to achieve this year and so it might take a little time to get there and a bit more of an effort from me in order to get back into the swings of things. Working from home can have it’s difficult times and so I wanted to talk about how I’m coping with a home office at the moment.

Longer Hours

I have to be honest and say I’m working more hours than before and that’s because my routine and schedule still doesn’t have a lot of structure. I’m still getting up later than I should be and if I were getting up earlier, I’d probably motivate myself to work faster and harder, finishing the day at reasonable time. This is something that will change eventually, again it’s all about adapting to the new way of my work life. There’s a lot more resting on my shoulders in terms of the pressure of earning enough money each month. Not to mention I’m currently saving for our wedding and also for my partner’s 30th which unfortunately for me lands on the same year we get married. Basically, none of my friends will see me other than on my wedding day come 2021.

I’m Definitely A Night Owl

I’m definitely not a morning person and that certainly makes it difficult when I’m trying to get up early. I’d much prefer working later into the night and then have a few extra hours in bed. As long as I’m getting enough rest then that’s ok but I know that’s not exactly for mine and Sam’s relationship when I’m not going bed at the same time as he is. I think I’m just working on striking a balance at the moment, but I’ll get there.

Having A Seperate Work Space Helps

Yes, I do have the occassional day or two where I’ll work in bed or work in the living room. I don’t have any television on when I’m in the living room but I like the change of scenary every now and then. Having a seperate work space in our apartment has definitely made that transition from a work office in London to an actual home office a lot easier. I think I’m still in need of a few things before it’s complete. I’d really like a small stand for my macbook to sit on and to also get some more storage options, perhaps something to go on the walls in terms of shelving or something from Furniturebox.

Comfort Is Important

I think it’s safe to say that most freelancers and those that work from home tend to live in their pyjamas. And that’s the same for me! There’s the odd day when I’ll get changed into casual wear or put on makeup to do a look for my blog or Instagram but aside from that, the self-employed life isn’t glamourous. Most days I’ll have my dressing gown on and my comfy UGG slippers. Right now actually I’ve got a heat bag in the form of a pig on my tummy because I’m on my period and she needs some comfort. These aren’t things I would have been able to get if I were at a company working, so I’m counting these as blessings!
