How Much Do Skincare Specialists Earn?

You might see skincare specialists in salons, department stores, and skincare clinics and wonder how much they are earning. You would be surprised to know that they are actually making more than the federal minimum wage in the United States. More importantly, they do what they love. Becoming a skin care specialist is not simple. You have to undergo rigorous medical aesthetics training to acquire the necessary skills for your practice.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has a positive outlook on the industry. For example, from 2018 to 2028, the industry is expected to grow by 11%. From the 71,800 workers in 2018 to 79,600 in 2028, more and more people are choosing the profession as a long-term career.

Advantages of having medical aesthetics training:

You control your own hours, primarily if you work as a freelancer
You have more time for yourself or your family
The profession can be rewarding since you are helping somebody gain confidence in their appearance
Your options are not limited because you can work in a spa, salon, department store, and medical office
In terms of earnings, you can choose to work on a commission or a fixed salary
It is never dull. Apart from learning about different skincare issues on the job, you will also attend training, symposiums, workshops, and further education to enhance your skills.

Based on the BLS review, for instance, almost half of the estheticians are self-employed, which is the most attractive aspect of the profession.

Their Earnings

The BLS revealed that as of May 2018, the median hourly pay for skincare specialists was $15.05. The least paid are earning about $9.29 per hour while the lucky upper 10% are earning $28.75 per hour.

Those who can get a job in a doctor’s office ($19.35) are paid better compared to their counterparts. The second highest-earners are those who work as freelancers ($14.61/hour), followed by estheticians who work in personal care and health stores ($13.73/hour).

In comparison, according to the US Department of Labor, the minimum wage for non-exempt workers is $7.25. Of course, states have the authority to come up with their own minimum wages for workers, depending on the cost of living and other factors.

As of 2018, no state has reached the $15/per hour minimum wage. However, New Jersey enacted a law in February 2019 to enforce a $15-per hour wage by 2024. The other states that passed similar legislation last year were Illinois, Maryland, and Connecticut.

Usually, skincare specialists work about 40 hours each week, and most of them depend on the job for their livelihood.

Finishing your medical aesthetics training is a good alternative if you are tired of working a 9-to-5 job. And if you could not afford to lose your job right now, you can still use your newfound knowledge to moonlight during your off-hours. The extra income will help defray your household expenses and also provide you with a little extra for the rainy days.
