.There’s really nothing better than tapas. I love the concept of being able to pick and choose from a range of small dishes. As we had a Spanish-esque Hello Fresh to use up, we teamed it up with a few tapas bits. Sous Chef sells all types of ingredients from around the world and they sent me some Gochujang Hot Pepper Paste to try out. I’ve never tried this type of hot pepper paste before. And even though my spice levels have improved, I was a little nervous to try it. However, with Korean dishes, the hotter pastes are supposed to be sweeter for the most part.

I thought the side dip would be a great side dip to enjoy with the wraps and other tapas bits. I mixed two tablespoons with a tablespoon of mayonnaise. Don’t be put off by the stark, fiery red colour. Even Sam (who has very little tolerance for spice), found that this was tasty and not as spicy as he thought it would be. It’s hard to explain but I really loved the flavour of the Gochujang Hot Pepper Paste. It tastes a little bit like Kimchi. Kimchi is fermented cabbage but it can be made out of other vegetables too.
Gochujang Hot Pepper Paste
This pepper paste condiment is very versatile and despite simply using it for a side dip, I’m excited to start cooking with it when it comes to our future meals. I’ve already combined it with orzo rice and king prawns as a delicious, light lunch. I would love to incorporate it into some vegetables too as I think would make a nice sauce. I would also love to use it as a marinade for perhaps some chicken or pork? The pepper paste itself comes in a 1KG tub, although you can also get a 500g version of it.
For our tapas meal, I lathered the dip onto the prawns with refried beans combo, which then went into a wrap with guacamole and lettuce leaves. It has a slight smokiness to it, which I love and I think this is a condiment that I’m certainly going to look out for when I’m dining on Asian cuisine out and about in London.
