We typically associated going off-grid with kooks and people with anarchist streaks. But it’s not just the periphery of society that’s obsessed with the idea. Mainstream celebs are going off-grid too.

There are loads of reasons to go off-grid in today’s world:
To protect the environment
To pursue a life of peace and tranquillity
To reduce your burden on natural resources
To live more independently
To get away from socially destructive situations
To get more in touch with nature
To explore your spiritual side
To enjoy the thrill of adventure
To live more frugally and save money
To have a more minimalist lifestyle where you worry less about having stuff
To experience a different way of being
Celebrities tend to value many of the items on this list. Many for instance are environmentalists. And many just want a bit of peace and quiet, away from the spotlight and attention.
Interestingly, though, many of them are also doing it in style. We’re not just talking about wooden huts by a lake. We’re talking about solar-panel encrusted mansions with beautiful verandas overlooking stunning vistas.
Going off-grid has been around for decades. But doing it in style is something relatively new. And it comes from the fact that technology now allows people to do it sustainably.
Take energy, for instance. Fifty years ago, if you wanted heat in your home off-grid, you had to burn something – usually coal. But today, you don’t have to do any of that – just get it from solar panels.
Also, if you wanted electricity, you usually had to run a smelly diesel generator. Again, not good for your health or the environment. But now, thanks to renewables, you have other options.
Even water supplies are improving. You can get round water tanks that will never degrade and don’t make your water taste like plastic. And you can fill them using filtered rainwater or water collected from natural sources.
Luxury Off-Grid Living
Living off-grid doesn’t mean that you have to live a monastic lifestyle. You need some basic utilities in place, but beyond that, it’s very much what you make of it.
Many “luxe” off-grid homes, for instance, come with all of the modern conveniences you’d expect in a connected home. You get power showers, jacuzzis, beautiful decor, and all the kitchen appliances you could ever want.
It’s possible because many of these homes feature massive swatches of solar cells on their exteriors, either on the building itself, or arranged on an array in the garden. They also come connected to batteries and heat up water directly, negating the need for a gas boiler.
Many also try to locate above geothermal sites. The idea here is to simply borrow warmth from the core of the Earth and free-ride on that. (Why don’t more people do this?)
Ultimately, these homes bring you a new kind of freedom. Imagine being able to say goodbye to all your utility bills. It would be incredible, right?
Well, that’s the promise of off-grid living. Technology is making it possible to live a modern life without actually having to connect to the grid. What do you think about how celebs are going off-grid.
