Why You Should Visit Yorkshire This Year

The world is full of places to visit, sights to see, and things to do. But if you’re looking for inspiration, then look no further than the north of England, specifically Yorkshire. Yorkshire is the largest county in England, so you know that there’s plenty of exploration to be done. Let’s look at some reasons to visit Yorkshire this summer, as well as some ideas for where to go.

Stunning Views

Yorkshire has a great combination of rural areas and cities to explore, but you simply can’t talk about Yorkshire without talking about the views. If you’ve ever read Wuthering Heights, you’ll remember plenty of mentions of the dramatic moors spreading across the Yorkshire countryside. You can enjoy long hikes with amazing views to soak in.

The Yorkshire Dales are also famously beautiful, with rolling hills, green fields, and lovely woodland to appreciate. If you want more dramatic views, then the Pennines feature some high mountains and challenging walks for more adventurous hikers.

As well as the moors and dales, Yorkshire also has a long and beautiful rugged coastline, featuring cliffs and beaches alike. Depending on where you find Yorkshire accommodation, you can even appreciate both of these landscapes in one trip without travelling too far.

Exciting Cities

While Yorkshire is a great destination for those who prefer sleepy breaks or hiking holidays, there’s something for the city lovers as well. Yorkshire has some great cities and towns to explore, each with a rich history and culture.

The historic city of York is simply beautiful, with grand architecture and so much to do and see. If you love chocolate or fudge, then you’ll appreciate the lovely little confectioner’s stores which reflect York’s chocolate history.

If you’re closer to the coast, then swing by Whitby. This seaside city and the nearby coastal towns feature a stunning coast and are famous for great fish and chips. You could also pop into the fascinating Museum of Victorian Science for some family-friendly hands-on activities. Who said holidays couldn’t be educational?

As the biggest county in England, there are plenty more cities to experience in Yorkshire, including Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, and Redcar. Each of these cities and others has attractions and shops to explore, so there’s always something to discover.

Historic Sites

Yorkshire has a long history, stretching from ancient times. You can find evidence of Celtic tribes from before the Romans invaded, as well as plenty of evidence of the Roman occupation. For example, the city of York was once the Roman capital in the north of England (rather insultingly called Britannia Inferior) and the joint capital of Roman Britain. The Roman fortifications still remain in the city.

Yorkshire was also a hotbed of conflict during the Viking period and of the Norman invasion. Because of all of these battles and strife, Yorkshire is peppered with medieval castles that have survived hundreds of years into the modern days. These castles and other historical sites are a brilliant way to explore the tumultuous history of Britain.
