Many people struggle to relax. They will try to sit down and can’t last 2 minutes because their mind and body are just too chaotic. The natural response is to distract yourself with Netflix or Instagram. This isn’t a good way to relax, as it will only stimulate your mind.
What most people don’t realise is that there are different habits and behaviours throughout the day that are going to impact how relaxed you can feel. Some are going to support you feeling more relaxed and how quickly you can relax your mind and body, whereas others are going to stop you from relaxing.
In today’s society, learning how to relax is key. You may know methods of relaxing, such as yoga, meditation or being out in nature. But you need to learn how to relax when doing those things. Well, it all starts with the hidden habits throughout your day. Tackle these and you will find that your efforts are much more effective.

#1 Smoking: a false friend
Many people turn to smoking to help them cope and relax. However, that isn’t how nicotine works. Nicotine increases your blood pressure and your heart rate. It tells your brain you are calmer while putting your nervous system on edge, essentially tricking your brain. So you are not relaxing when you smoke and long-term – it reduces your ability to naturally relax. If you smoke, consider how you can adopt other practices to reduce it and eventually give up. You could practice breathing techniques, which mimic the smoking habit. Or you can opt for an alternative, such as a delta 8 vape.
#2 Multitasking
With technology, multitasking is on the rise. People are not able to sit still or just do one thing at a time. It is easily done, as everything is so easy and convenient now. But what people end up doing is things like watching television while scrolling on social media, replying to emails, or doing a work call while eating your lunch. This keeps your brain busy, busier than it should be and always in “go” mode. Take some time to do one thing at a time, and reduce the noise. Give yourself permission to actually slow down and even pause.
#3 Doom scrolling
Social media is used by most people around the world now. It is great as it connects you to people and provides you with access to so much information. It is also commonly used as a break from work and reality. However, it can spike anxiety and make your brain more restless. See if you can replace your screen time with a calming hobby such as reading or drawing. This will help you to truly relax and switch off, calm your body and reduce the chaos in your mind. The more you do this, the more relaxing it will feel over time.
Relaxing is a really important habit to develop, as it will impact your health and well-being. Consider these habits that are harmful to your relaxation efforts and see where you can make improvements.
