Why Grease Was And Still Is So Iconic

I’ve got chills, they’re multiplying because you’re the one that I want and can you believe it’s been 40 years since a wop ba-ba lu-bop and wop bam boom hit our cinema screens. I am of course not going mad, I’m talking about Grease. And apologies, I’ll stop trying to fit songs from the film into this blog post. It’s the 40th Anniversary of Grease, can you believe it?

GreaseNo me neither. Grease was one of my favourite movies growing up. I remember the VHS tape I had (yes I’m that old) of the film and I played it on repeat for many years. I’m surprised my parents didn’t chuck it out when I wasn’t looking in. There’s only so many wop ba-ba- sorry I’ll stop. But this film to me was and still is incredible. It’s one of my favourite movies of all time and I think it’s iconic.

A Character We Can All Relate To

You’ve got the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds. All of them having different personalities and mannerisms that contribute to the group. And as a viewer, a lot of people can relate to at least one of the characters in this movie. I related most to Rizzo because she wasn’t squeaky clean, she didn’t give a rat’s arse what anyone thought of her and she put people in their place.

Whether you found a kinship towards Marty and her effortless capabilities of having multiple lovers or Frenchy’s wunderlust for life, that’s why many appreciate this film because they love the characters.

The Perils Of High School

A film set in high-school is always going to hit the nostalgia and we can all identify moments that probably now we’d not even question but back in secondary school, it was the worst thing in our lives.

Personally, I hated high school but it’s a right of passage for every single person who goes through education, so we have to suck it up and just get through it. Grease definitely touches on these moments but doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Talking about Grease makes me totally want to watch this now and if you find yourself wanting a movie night, you can head on over the Clifton College who are putting on a special screening of the film. You can buy tickets here and it’s fancy dress, so get dressed to hand jive baby! (sorry last one)

Super Cheesy Moments

From the cross fades on Summer Nights to the randomness of Danny and Sandy’s car flying off into the sky during the end song, this film is full of the cheese, and I’m talking that mature cheddar kind. But as much as we cringe, they make the film so iconic. It’s a very much a one of a kind musical film due to it’s wacky and wonderful scenes and songs.

Memorable Dances & Songs

You cannot deny that the dancing and songs in this film are pretty special. From Grease Lighting to You’re The One That I Want, they are karaoke classics on a night out and they’re often played and weddings and parties galore.

The dancing in the film was also top notch, especially when it came to the moves of John Travolta. I must say I had more of a crush on Kinicky but boy did Danny have the dancing feet and Ken doll attraction.

Sandy’s Transformation

Sandy is a bit of a wet flannel throughout the film. She falls hopelessly for a summer fling but then when she unexpectedly finds him at the same school, she gets rejected by his seemingly jock-like persona that he puts on in front of the lads. At the end though, Sandy is transformed into this leader clad, permed to the high heavens, sex goddess and Danny is putty in her hands.

I think this transformation was definitely a defining moment in the film because it’s such a ‘WOW’ moment. The other T-Birds’ jaw drops at the sight of her and the ladies behind Sandy are looking hella smug. #girlpowerbitches
