I think I say this on behalf of most people but Christmas is my absolute, favourite time of year and I think it’s to do with how much excitement your parents create around the festive season. For my parents, I always had a positive experience around Christmas and the excitement that we always had on Christmas morning was palpable. And that’s a feeling I get now, even at the age of 27. Gawd I’m 27. Anyway, why is Christmas my favourite time of year. Well, let me tell you – even if you don’t want to know.
Spending Time With Family
As you get older and you realise that the guy with the white beard and red suit is actually your mum and dad sneaking down the stairs like a pair of clumsy armed robbers, you care less about the presents and more about spending time with your loved ones. This is coupled with the fact that we live in London and my parents are back up in the Midlands. And that for me has been hard because I’m unlikely to ever be a 10 minute drive away from my family, even if we move somewhat out of London. Family is so important to me and the people I surround myself with are my family too – friends included. So to not have my mum and dad close by will be a challenge when I have children or find a spider in my home and my dad isn’t nearby to come and get it.
The Food
Oh c’mon guys, need I say anymore? There’s no way you can go on a diet because food is all around you throughout the Christmas period. It’s there when you wake up, you eat simply for the sake of eating and it’s all oh so bad for you. At my family home, we have buffets literally every evening. The fridge is just packed with food and desserts are in ample supply. I can’t wait to veg out on the sofa.
And The Drink
There’s two traditions that have been created in the Redman household, one is Sherry and the other is Bailey. No I’m not talking about household pets but the tipples. Whenever we put up the tree around Christmas time growing up, my mum and dad would always have a glass of sherry. At one point (underage probably), I had my first thimble of sherry and I was converted. Boy that stuff is good. So much so now that I’ve carried on the tradition here in our home. Although the difference is that me and Sam have a small glass and then I continue to drink it all myself over the Christmas period. The Baileys is a thing me and my mum share and she showed me the bottle the other day. We’ve got some drinking to do when I visit, that’s all I’m going to say on that note.
Watching SO MANY CHRISTMAS FILMS!
And who can’t say they don’t like watching The Grinch, Harry Potter and Home Alone for the 4,508,548th time. As someone who works A LOT, I rarely take time to just sit in front of the television and so the Christmas period is an opportunity for me to just relax and watch hours of festive telly.
I’m so excited to spend Christmas at my parent’s house this year. What do you love about Christmas? Let me know in the comments below.
