It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these but becoming a mum means that I’ve got a lot of time on my hands when the little one is playing independently. While I enjoy playing with him and his toys, there are only so many books I can read over and over again, and only so much enjoyment I can get from the toys he plays with. So, with that being said, here’s what you should be watching on Netflix this month.
I Am Killer
As an avid fan of serial killers and crime documentaries, I Am Killer is on its – I think – third season on Netflix. It’s a documentary programme that hears the crime or crimes of an inmate (all based in America) and tells the story from their point of view. It then speaks to various members of the victim’s family, sometimes the criminal’s family and relevant prosection/police officers, etc.
It’s such a great documentary in the way it’s filmed and structured. It has you questioning what you would do in their position, as well as whether you find them complicit or guilty of their crimes. I think America has a justice system that is oftentimes too harsh and therefore puts people in prison instead of rehabilitating those who could probably go back into civilization with a bit of help and support.
However, there are definitely some people who deserve to be locked up due to the threat of them to society and it’s also interesting to see them try and justify their actions. A particular excuse to remove themselves from their crime is ‘finding god’.
Black Doves
Starring Keira Knightly, Ben Whishaw, and Sarah Lancashire, Black Doves follows Keira Knightl’s character. A seemingly normal woman married to a man who is pipped to be the next Prime Minister is actually a spy who has been undercover for years. It basically follows her story as she falls in love with another man who is subsequently killed. Keira’s character is then driven to find out who killed him and for what purpose. I binge-watched the series in a few days and I’m hoping a second season is in the works.
Ben Whishaw – who interestingly voices Paddington – is a fantastic actor and he plays this gritty role really well. Sarah Lancashire plays quite a cold character and now I really want to watch Happy Valley because I’ve not seen any of it and need to see more of Sarah.
Is It Cake?
If you love sweet treats as much as I do, then you’re going to love, Is It Cake? It’s a baking show where contestants have to fool the judges with their baking talents. Making everyday objects into cakes which are then judged alongside real objects. Some of the design work on these cakes is absolutely phenomenal and there have already been three seasons of this, along with I think a Christmas special – which I’ve watched.
The guy who hosts it – Mikey Day – is hilarious and I do feel it’s been made so successful due to how great he is as a host. Like Nicole Byer from Nailed It – another great baking show – it’s often the hosts that really help to influence the success of a new show.
Motherland
There are a lot of television shows heading over to Netflix that have already been on mainstream television channels, one of those being Motherland. I didn’t watch Motherland when it first came out and well earned its hype and popularity. Since becoming a mum though, it was one I put on my list, and let me just say that I REALLY want it to come back. I know that there’s a spin-off show coming out very soon (if not already out by the time you read this) which follows Amanda from the show.
However, I think there’s so much more they could do with the show and the characters that I’m hoping there’s something in the works.
Queer Eye
Ahh, who doesn’t love a feel-good show like Queer Eye. I think this is like season 8 or 9 and I binge-watch through them all so quickly when they come out. It’s had a slight recast after Bobby Berk left. There was a lot of fallout from Bobby leaving but I will say I think Bobby does the most work out of all of them and therefore it probably takes most of his time.
As a professional interior designer, I can see why he might have left simply because he probably has so many more clients wanting him for his work now – all probably paying a lot more money than what Netflix would give him.
Anyway, I digress. If you want a bit of queer happiness in your life, then Queer Eye is a great pick-me-up and an escape from the shitty world we seem to live in at the moment.
The Man With A 1000 Kids
I recommend you watch this with a glass of wine because it left me seething. A man by the name of Jonathan Jacob Meijer is a Dutch YouTuber who donated/gave his sperm at many private sperm donor banks across the world. Suffice to say, he’s now the father of over 1,000 kids. Yes, over a 1,000.
As it’s mentioned in the documentary, how this man isn’t in prison is beyond me. Not only is it just disgusting that he’s been allowed to donate so much of his sperm but ethically, all those who have been born from his sperm will now need to tread carefully when it comes to eventually dating. Like imagine if one of those children ends up dating/falling in love with another one of the children without realising it.
It’s just wild, and it’s a documentary that will have your jaw dropping to the floor. I still cannot believe he’s out as a free man. He should be locked up or at least prohibited from ever giving sperm to donor banks again. The crazy thing about all of it though is that there are so many people watching his videos and in support of what he’s done. WILD.
Culinary Class Wars
Finally, this show is in Korean but it’s an excellent cooking show and one that I really enjoyed watching. It’s a cooking show that takes twenty of the best chefs in the world competing against 100 professional chefs, whether they be restaurant owners to YouTubers who cook.
It’s a really interesting concept and basically each episode sees more and more of the 100 left, with the final 20 going up against the creme de la creme of chefs. What I love about the show is that you can tell it’s good and a great budget. They make such a spectacle out of it which adds to the entertainment value of the show itself.
What have you been watching on Netflix recently? Let me know in the comments below.
