How To Keep Your Stress Levels Low During A House Move

When I think about a house move right now, I’m like – no thank you. It’s a stressful event in your life where you need everything to align perfectly to get your stuff out of one house and into another. However, it’s only been recently that we used moving services to shift our stuff from storage to our new property in Stoke-on-Trent, so maybe I’ll feel differently about moving in the future.

Despite my dislike of moving, we’ve been pretty fortunate to have two fantastic removal companies that we worked with when moving house. We were also incredibly organised so that we weren’t doing too much in the way of last-minute packing before the big move. With that being said, here are some helpful tips to keep your stress levels low during a house move.

1. Plan everything ahead of time

Try to plan everything ahead of time so that you’re well prepared with every element of the move. The timeline that lays out all of the key touchpoints in your moving journey is helpful to establish.

I made a list of what I need to organise and gather as soon as we get a whiff of the moving date. From the removal company hire to the purchasing of packaging, it’s all useful to establish early on. This is especially the case for getting in touch with companies to let them know that you’ve moved or have moved too.

2. Choose the right removal company

How do you choose the right removal company? There are so many options out there and so many recommendations that it can be hard to figure out which ones are the best and which ones might be ones to avoid.

When it comes to cheap removal services UK, it’s good to read the reviews because there will be honest feedback on how well these companies performed. When you’re choosing cheaper alternatives, for the most part, they’ll be good, but the reviews will help you filter the best ones from the worst.

3. Make sure to have all of the packing materials

Be sure to have all of the packing materials you need ready to go. It’s also good to have more than you need, rather than not enough. There’s nothing worse than running out of bubble wrap or cardboard boxes and having to make a mad dash to the shops to get some.

We definitely had to reorder more as time went on, but we had help from our removal company, who supplied the extra materials we needed, which was an absolute godsend for some of the items.

4. Take the packing a bit at a time

When it comes to packing, chances are, you’ll find yourself doing it up until the very last minute, typically. However, if you space it out, it’ll help spread the time it takes for you to pack, and it’ll be a more enjoyable experience as a result.

That’s what I found worked well for me when I started packing our two-bed flat. As soon as I got a date or a semblance of a date, I started prepping and packing things that I didn’t use that often and stored the boxes out of the way, in wardrobes and up against walls.

5. Have help from friends and family

Community is important during these big moments in life, and that includes a moving day. See what friends and family are available and around to help.  Where the help isn’t readily available, there are useful and cheap relocation services UK that are worth taking advantage of.
