There’s nothing better than coming back to a home that you’re in love with. It has everything you want and need and it’s all yours. Myself and Sam are slowly adding furniture, decor and other bits and pieces to our apartment and it’s transforming into a home in front of our eyes. But how do you make your house a home?
Pictures emote so much from us and a house could never feel like home to me without my pictures. No matter where they are, even if they’re currently in boxes, I know that I have those photos in my life to look back on when I’m old and grey.
At the moment though, as we’re decorating our apartment, I’m waiting so that I can get some nice frames that will fit with the colour schemes of our rooms.
Have A Stash Of Candles
Candles really are an essential in the home and in no way should they be for decorative purposes only. BURN THE DAMN THINGS. There’s nothing sadder than a dusty, un-used candle.
Fragranced candles are obviously the best but just having that warm glow in the evening, with the lights dimmed down as you’re curled up on the sofa or in bed is just the best.
Bring the outdoors in, that’s something that is harped on about in many home interior magazines and online publications that I’ve read in the past. Having a little greenery definitely perks up your mood and makes your place feel more like home.
Whether it’s a fresh bouquet of flowers every now and then or perhaps a selection of plants to decorate a windowsill or
Fill The Space With Memories
Yes it’s pretty much hoarding but as long as it’s actually relevant and means something then why not fill your space with memories. I have a couple of boxes full of ticket stubs, photos and silly things that probably seem meaningless to a stranger but actually hold a lot of sentimental value.
The item doesn’t have to be something you’ve had for years though. I’m planning on getting some Mediterranean style lanterns to go in the living room because they’ll remind me of Morocco and when I got proposed to.
One thing that I’m looking forward to getting in our apartment is some gorgeous roman style blinds. We’re quite fortunate that we live high up rather than on the ground floor, so we can get away with not having blinds for the time being. However, I do like the feeling blinds or curtains give me when they’re closed. It’s that warm, fuzzy, cosy feeling of the outside being shut out that I love. Also because I want to walk around my flat starkers, just because.
A Personalised Welcome Mat
Isn’t a personalised welcome mat the most tackiest and cheesiest thing in the world? Yes but I still want one. I want it to say Mr & Mrs Griffiths or something along those lines. Even though our flat technically isn’t outside, it doesn’t mean I can’t have a welcome mat for guests.
Invest In The Smellies
When we moved into our apartment, we got a load of plug in air fresheners and jelly air fresheners to keep the place smelling fresh. I’ve noticed this yummy scent every time I open the front door and it makes me grin from ear to ear.
